NHS Boys Basketball is in the midst of a strong season

Justin Fischetti
Staff Writer

On the night of Jan. 10, 2018, the NHS Varsity Boys Basketball team found itself in a close battle with Holy Ghost Prep. With the team down a point in the final seconds, starting point guard Kevin Dougherty would not let the chance for a signature win getaway. With the game on his hands, he quickly drove to the hoop where he absorbed contact by Holy Ghost players and made the tough, but clutch bucket to give New Hope a one point lead with three seconds left. He would calmly sink the susquent ‘and one’ free throw to extend the lead to two. Holy Ghost had one more chance to win it, but missed a 3 at a buzzer, sending the New Hope crowd at Solebury School into celebration with a 48-46 win.
Despite the high school gym renovations getting in the way, the NHS Varsity Boys Basketball team is in the midst of a great season, with the Holy Ghost win the highlight moment of the season thus far. Although they started the season with three straight losses to Upper Moreland, Upper Perkiomen, and Church Farm, they have responded from the slow start by winning nine of their thirteen games since, and now have a 9-7 record with six regular season games remaining as of Jan. 26. Teams New Hope has beaten over this stretch include Calvary Christian Academy, Delaware County Christian, South Hunterdon, the aforementioned Holy Ghost Prep win, and a surprisingly dominant 19-point win over a Christopher Dock team that had an 11-1 record heading into the game.
After a Jan. 27 game against William Tennent, the remainder of the regular season will pit New Hope against rival teams that it had already played earlier in the season, including Valley Forge Military Academy and Lower Moreland. New Hope is already in good position for making the playoffs, but will need to come up with some huge wins in these final weeks of the regular season against those rival teams to solidify their playoff seeding and have a home playoff game.
New Hope is led in scoring by point guard Kevin Dougherty with 13.9 PPG (points per game), and power forward Nick Garritano is not far behind with 12.7 PPG. Garritano also leads the team in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game. Center Topher Taylor also contributes with 9.3 PPG and 6.3 rebounds per game, and he also succeeds on the defensive end with 2.9 blocks per game. Also on the defensive side, small forward Morgan Shadle contributes with his lockdown defense and hustle. Rounding out the starting lineup is shooting guard Connor Wallace. The Lions also receive a spark off the bench from small forward Patrick Cooney, shooting guard Reese Sterling, small forward Frank Spadavecchia, and center Caleb Shiel.
The overall success from the team comes despite the issues the high school gym renovations are causing. Due to the high school gym being unavailable due to the renovations, and the middle school gym not being suitable enough to host a home game, New Hope must play its home games at the nearby Solebury School gym instead. Despite this, many New Hope students make it to the games regardless and continue to provide a home-like atmosphere for the team with their support. However, in the middle of February the high school gym renovations will have progressed far enough to allow it to support a home game. If New Hope can finish the season strong and earn a home playoff game, then the high school gym will be available in time to allow the first ever NHS Varsity Boys Basketball game at the newly-renovated gym to be playoff game in mid-February.

The Broad Street Bullies are back

Jay MacDowell and Matt Benda
Staff Writers

The Broad Street Bullies have bullied their way back among the other division leaders. They’re in third place in the Metropolitan division falling behind only the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils. With a record of 24 wins and 16 losses, they are only five points behind the division leading Washington Capitals.
In the past ten games, the Flyers have won eight with two of those coming in overtime from center Travis Konecny.
In recent years the Flyers have been overshadowed by their Western Pennsylvania rival, the back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins, but this year they have passed them. The Flyers have only a 1-point lead to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets. Hopefully, the Flyers will maintain their playoff spot position because last year their season came to an early end when they fell just short of a spot. The Flyers last playoff run came in the 2015-2016 season when they were knocked out within a few rounds.
This season looks promising as the look to have their young talent lead the team. Key players such as Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny provide strong offense and defense at key times in the game. Ivan Provorov, in his second season with the Flyers and in the National Hockey League, has been a brick wall, holding opposing teams to minimal goals. Maybe this young talent has kickstarted a successful season for the Philadelphia Flyers.

NHS Girls Basketball Honor Seniors by Winning Senior Night Game

Georgia Pappas and Eric Locke
Staff Writers

With a final score of 55-18, the NHS girls basketball team victoriously took the win against Plumstead Christian on Jan. 19 in honor of their graduating players, Sarah Wilson and Olivia Keenan, in their senior night game.
The offensive lineup allowed the Lions to travel up and down the court within seconds, with players like Sarah Wilson travelling down to the basket for an open shot. Wilson also contributed incredible 3-point shots and precise passing combinations, as well as juniors Jordan Sherman and Zoe Palau.
The upperclassmen of the girls’ team pulled out their skills during the game as well as the freshmen of the group. Juliana Covino, Kate Dougherty, Rachel Saxton and Shannon Herbert were determined and quick on their feet in order to help their team get the win for their seniors.
The few times the ball got on the other side of the court, the girls provided solid defense against Plumstead and blocked shots left and right. And once the girls got the ball again and went for the shots, they kept shooting and didn’t give up with strong rebounds.
The players of New Hope played a strong game all the way through, even while they were up by over 30 points. At the end of the second half, NHS was up 33-5. By keeping the ball on their side, smooth and strong passing, and excellent rebounding skills, the team was unstoppable. The team next year will surely miss the seniors, and for now we’re hoping for great things from this incredible group of athletes.

The Super Bowl is Set!

On Sunday, Jan. 21, this year’s Super Bowl match up was set, featuring the New England Patriots, and the local underdogs, the Philadelphia Eagles, in the biggest sports event of the year. The Patriots return to the Super Bowl, looking to repeat and remain on top of the sports world. Tom Brady is looking for his sixth Super Bowl victory and to solidify his legacy as the greatest player to play the game of football. While the Eagles coming off a season to remember look to rally behind their backup quarterback and win their first super bowl. The city of Philadelphia is buzzing with excitement as the eagles will get a rematch of the Super Bowl 13 years ago where the Patriots defeated the Eagles 24-21.
Even with the faith of the fans of Philadelphia, the Eagles are clear under dogs, with backup quarterback Nick Foles having little to no playoff experience, compared to Tom Brady who is competing in his eighth Super Bowl appearance. The Eagles are going to need to play very conservatively and play the field position and rely on their elite defense to keep them in the game. The Eagles defense is going to have play their best game of the season in order for the Eagles to keep this game competitive and at least give Nick Foles a chance to win the game. The game plan for the Eagles should be to try and hold the ball on offense as much as possible and keep Brady on the sidelines.
However, with all against the home team, all fans have to do for this Sunday is have faith, and believe in what the Eagles have accomplished so far, and hopefully continue their success again in the biggest game of their franchise. As for the Patriots and their fans, they have the chance to make history and tie the Steelers for the most Super Bowls by a franchise. This would also be Tom Brady’s sixth Super Bowl, solidifying himself as the greatest player in NFL history.

New Weight room pleases many students

Will Kelley and Mike Borys and Lear Asplundh
Staff Writers

For decades NHS sports teams have used a hot, stuffy, jam packed weight that hit you immediately with the stench of sweat. Due to the renovation of the high school, NHS was able to build a new weight room that has brand new equipment, air conditioning, and tons of space. This new addition of the weight room will benefit each and every single one of the NHS athletic programs. Classes will also be held in this new weight room such as Fitness for Life, which is taught by Mr. Sherman. As NHS high school sports grow every single year, the weight room is always occupied after school.
Many students are excited about the change for the football team’s benefit.
“It is a great change from the other, old weight room we had to use my sophomore and freshman year,” Mike Borys, class of 2020, said.
As of Jan. 8, the Football and Lacrosse teams have both been using the weightroom Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to help the players get stronger and more fit.
The football and lacrosse teams are not the only ones to use the weight room, every single NHS team has access to the equipment in the weight room after school. Although, teams that are on their offseason have a higher priority than other teams. The new equipment in the weightroom is very useful. It has 8 different bench press stations, 11 pull-up bars, and two dumbbell racks in weights ranging from 5-50 pounds. The weight room also carries 5 air bikes and 6 different rowing machines that are perfect for cardio. With all the extra space in the weightroom, it is not wasted. The extra room is perfect for free workouts such as sit-ups, push-ups and planks. This new addition from the renovation will benefit NHS athletics for years and years to come.

Super Bowl Preview: Underdog Birds have a chance

Logan Waterman
Staff Writer

The stage has been set for Super Bowl LII. The New England Patriots, which seems to happen yearly at this point, will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Minneapolis. This game is a Super Bowl XXXIX rematch which Eagles fans have haunting memories from as the Patriots went on to win 24-21. That game was the last time the Eagles have played for the Lombardi Trophy until now.
Local die hard Eagles fan Adam Somers doesn’t remember the Eagles last Super Bowl very well but he does remember the last time the Eagles and Patriots faced off. “Last year when the Eagles went into to Foxborough they blew out the Patriots. It will be an easy win for the Eagles.”
After Carson Wentz tore his ACL and was sidelined for the season every news network and football fan thought their season was complete. However after a 38-7 win against the stout Minnesota Vikings defense they seem to be better than ever. However 5 time Super Bowl Champ Tom Brady has returned to the Super Bowl for the 8th time in his career. The 40 year old quarterback has shown no signs of slowing down after coming back down in the 4th quarter to defeat the up and coming Jacksonville Jaguars 24-20.
Will the “underdog” Eagles dethrone the Patriots dynasty? Or will the Patriots get their sixth Super Bowl to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for most in NFL history? We’ll just have to wait and see on Feb. 4.

The Islanders Big Move

Kel MacDowell
Staff Writer

The New York Islanders time in Brooklyn may be coming to an end. According to Newsday’s Jim Baumbach, The New York Islanders bid to build a brand new 18,000 seat arena In Belmont Park, NY, has been approved by the state. With this successful move , the team will be able to eventually leave the the Barclays Center behind where the organization has been playing since the beginning of 2015. The team has been competing with Major League Soccer’s New York City FC to build a new arena on the Belmont Park property.
The Islanders proposal for the new arena includes an 18,000-seat, year-round facility what will host 150 events annually. It will also offer 435,000-square feet of space for retail space, a 10,000-square foot innovation center and a hotel with 200-250 rooms. The cost for the team’s new arena has not been released yet. New York Islanders majority owner, Jon Ledecky did not say how much the facility would cost but he says it will be financed privately.
“We’re not looking for government funds,” Ledecky said.
Without governmental funds, it is a project that will take a lot of help and lots of money in order to be completed..
Right now the New York Islanders and the Brooklyn Nets share the arena at the Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn. Sharing the arena with the Nets has been difficult. The Islander fans have not shown up in the numbers needed to make the arrangement worthwhile. At an estimated 11,000 fans per game, the Islanders sit last in the NHL for fan attendance. The new arena and features hope to bring in more fans to attend the games.

Awarding the top NFL players from 2017

Jack Gawason and Nick Fest
Staff Writers

Most Valuable Player: Carson Wentz
This season the most controversial honor is the most prestigious. The MVP it has come down to a few players but no one has run away as the clear front runner for the award. The awards top contenders are quarterbacks Tom Brady, a perennial contender for the award, and Russell Wilson, wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back Todd Gurley, and second year quarterback Carson Wentz. Tom Brady had a good season, but with all the offensive weapons and his history of great seasons, he is not deserving of this award. Russell Wilson had an above average season with an offense that had a horrendous running game. He led his team in running and almost got the Seahawks into the playoffs with the most unbalanced offense in the NFL. Todd Gurley put up spectacular numbers but so did everyone on the Rams as a direct result to new play caller Sean McVay. Antonio Brown got into the discussion later on into the season and he really started to take off and look like a near lock to win the award before missing the last couple regular season games because of a calf injury. Just like Antonio Brown, Carson Wentz was a lock to be named the MVP before he tore his ACL in week 14 causing him also to miss the end of the season. Wentz’s season was so spectacular he even threw a touchdown pass on his torn ACL highlighting a win in Los Angeles against the Rams. Carson Wentz threw for 33 touchdowns one less than league leader Wilson who played two more games. Even with Carson’s 2017 campaign cut short by an injury he still deserves to be named the Most Valuable Player because of his importance to the 13-3 Eagles who look lost without him.

Offensive Player of the year: Todd Gurley
Todd Gurley was an absolute stud this year, easily running his way statistically being the best running back this year. It can also be argued he was the best player in the league. Although he does not deserve MVP because Carson Wentz meant more to his team, Todd Gurley should win this award. Rushing for over 1,300 yards along with over 700 yards receiving and his nineteen total touchdowns it was a very successful year for Gurley. The Rams offense went through Gurley as he excelled under Sean Mcvay’s play calls and different formations. Also, a candidate for comeback player of the year Todd Gurley has once again solidified himself as one of the best young running backs in the game.

Defensive Player of the year: Calais Campbell
Lately, this award has been given out primarily to J.J Watt or all star pass rushers Von Miller or Khalil Mack. Watt’s season was cut short due to injury and other guys had down years. But all year Calais Campbell has been somewhat under the radar after signing a four-year, 60 million dollar deal about to turn 31 this deal was troubling. Finishing with 14.5 sacks five more than his career high he is second in the entire league. Surrounded by many pro bowlers on a historic defense Calais has been awarded his third trip this year. With others receiving more credit and making the flashy plays like new accusations A.J Bouye and Marcell Dareus and second-year player, Jalen Ramsey, and third-year player Dante Fowler Jr. Calais Campbell has been more than reliable.

Coach of the year: Sean McVay
First year coach along with being the youngest coach in the league Sean McVay had a spectacular season. Sean McVay’s coaching career started early at age 22 when he found a job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a coaching assistant. His early experience and upbringings in a football family has allowed him to be the youngest coach in NFL history. McVay was somewhat of an experience for the Rams considering the previous five youngest head coaches all finished with losing records. Taking over a horrendous team after terrible seasons from  numerous coaches, the latest being Jeff Fisher, second-year player Todd Gurley, and rookie, first overall selection in the draft, Jared Goff it would be a challenge. McVay never made excuses, kept his cool with the media, and let his teams play and their 11-5 record and third seed in the NFC show his impact.

Barcelona signs Coutinho for a club record £142 million

Thomas Muzekari and Vince Vetrano
Staff Writers

Earlier this month, FC Barcelona completed its signing of Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho for a club record £142 million ($176 million/₿15000). The former Liverpool man had been expressing his interest for some time before the move indeed came to fruition. The deal’s cost surpassed what was spent for Ousmane Dembele, who Barcelona signed this past summer, for the most expensive transfer fee in the club’s history.
“This is an honor for me. It’s a great honor.” Coutinho said at his first press conference at Barcelona. “It’s my dream to be here.”
Coutinho is eligible to make his debut for his new club on Jan. 25 when Barca faces RCD Espanyol at home in the second leg of the Copa del Rey matchup, which the team currently trails 1-0 in on aggregate.
Though eligible to play in the Copa del Rey competition and in La Liga, the Brazilian will not be allowed to play in the Champions League this season. Barcelona’s next match in Europe’s biggest competition will be on Feb. 20 at Chelsea in the first leg of the round of 16 meeting.
Currently, Barcelona stands on top of La Liga with an unblemished record of 17-3-0. The closest team to them is Atletico Madrid who are 11 points behind them. Meanwhile, rivals Real Madrid are a whopping 19 points behind the league leaders, albeit with a game in hand.
Already with such a quality roster that has been so successful this season under first-year head coach Ernesto Valverde, it will be interesting to see how Coutinho fits into the team.

LiAngelo Ball’s implusive actions lead to new path

Matthew Bracco and Charles Bray
Staff Writers

After a mishap that led him to facing jail time in an unfamiliar country, and withdrawing from his college, LiAngelo Ball needed to embark on a new experience. LiAngelo had committed to UCLA for Division I basketball. However that involvement was cut short when on a team trip to China, he and two of his teammates were caught shoplifting from designer shops.
Ball, being the highest-profile player involved, said: “I’d like to start off by saying sorry for stealing from the stores in China. I’m a young man, but it’s not an excuse for making a really stupid decision.”
Due to his poor decisions, Ball was suspended from the team until further notice. His father, Lavar, being the outgoing and impulsive individual he is, decided to pull LiAngelo out of UCLA completely.
Claiming that he had another path for LiAngelo to enter, one that was superior to the experience he had as a UCLA basketball player.
Although hope seemingly was lost for LiAngelo, he recently signed a contract to play basketball overseas. Ball landed in rainy Lithuania on Jan. 3 to start his career at a local basketball club, BC Prienai. Little is known about the current situation of LiAngelo. Both he and his father have high hopes, with dreams of him following in his brother’s footsteps of being drafted into the NBA. With this setback, LiAngelo is still pursuing his dreams, but due to impulsive decisions, he now has to forge his own path to success.

Top 4 NFL Teams in the Playoffs

Jack Gawason and Nick Fest
Staff Writers

New England Patriots- After last season when they completed a Super Bowl comeback from a 28-3 deficit the Patriots continue to be the best team in the league. After some early season injuries most notably Julian Edelman and some key defensive players the team was not right. Then they played the Steelers in a crucial week 15 matchup playing for the top seed in the AFC playoffs. They looked like the traditional New England Patriots from the past couple years they fought on defense and moved the ball on offense scoring in the most needed times escaping with a three point win. With their history and recent success in the playoffs, knowing Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have won five super bowls together, they have to be the Super Bowl favorites heading in as the number one seed.

Pittsburgh Steelers- The Steelers three primary players on offense all had outstanding seasons. Antonio Brown led the league in receiving yards before his season wrapped up shortly after suffering a calf injury but he is expected to be back for the Steelers first playoff game. Ben Roethlisberger began the season tossing interception after interception but soon turned it around and finished as a top ten quarterback. When Le'veon Bell finally arrived after a hold out hoping for a bigger contract he quickly returned to himself padding his rushing and receiving totals turning in a typical Le’veon season in hopes of receiving a bigger contract next year. With these three weapons on offense this team needs be feared with their biggest challenge coming in a possible match up against the Patriots.

Los Angeles Rams- A completely revived Rams team, fresh into their new city, had a wonderful season. A needed change in a new coach, Sean McVay, the youngest coach in the league has produced tremendous results. Second year quarterback Jared Goff has enjoyed a bounceback season but nothing compared to running back Todd Gurley who is a comeback player of the year and most valuable player candidate. Their offense is scary with lots of weapons and successful play calls. On the other side of the football they have surrounded stud lineman Aaron Donald, a defensive player of the year candidate who seems to always be getting hits on the quarterback, with other skilled players.

Philadelphia Eagles- The Eagles were the league favorite at the conclusion of their week 13 win against the Rams with the record 11-2. Shortly after this win the team doctors would inform the press Carson Wentz had suffered an injury believed to be a torn ACL. He indeed tore his ACL and Nick Foles became the teams starter. With Nick Foles looking close to perfect and then quickly to below average in a small sample size(less than three games) Eagles fans have to be worried but with the pieces surrounding Foles on offense and defense you never know what can happen on playoff Sunday.

Dark Horse Candidate:
Buffalo Bills-Barely sneaking in to the playoffs after a Bengals touchdown on 4th and 12 that knocked the Ravens out of the playoffs. The Bills ended the longest playoff drought after 18 years of devastating seasons they are finally back. Another team with a new head coach, Sean McDermott seems to have this team heading in the right direction. They have Tyrod Taylor at quarterback who is doing a good job passing and rushing the ball with additional pieces in Lesean McCoy and the midseason addition of Kelvin Benjamin they are playing in a place they have not been in a while and who knows how they will react.
